Modern Buddhism as we know it was largely invented in the late 19th and early 20th centuries in the encounter between transnational Asian networks and western pioneers. This book explores some of the remarkable lives, cross-cultural exchanges and transformations of Buddhism in this formative period. This book was originally published as a special issue of Contemporary Buddhism.
