Discover the fascinating world of postwar British cinema with Ripping England! by Roger Rawlings, published in 2017. This insightful book spans 286 pages and delves into a pivotal era of British satire between 1947 and 1953, a time that produced iconic films such as Passport to Pimlico, Kind Hearts and Coronets, and The Lavender Hill Mob, alongside the groundbreaking radio show The Goon Show.
In Ripping England!, Rawlings explores how these works reflect the complexities of a nation grappling with the aftermath of war, the decline of empire, and the rise of the welfare state. By examining the cultural and social context of the time, Rawlings illuminates how these satirical gems laid the groundwork for a new British identity, which would be further developed by later movements like the Angry Young Men.
This book is a must-read for film enthusiasts and anyone interested in the rich tapestry of British cultural history.
